As Sheri Kobal, a librarian and director of intervention, aptly noted, math often carries a negative connotation, and starting with this mindset can help students become better math students. By focusing on creativity, curiosity, and joy in the math classroom, the plan aims to address the root causes of frustration and disengagement. However, it's essential to go beyond the surface-level changes and address the systemic issues that have led to persistent achievement gaps. For instance, the plan's emphasis on ensuring access and equity in math education is a step in the right direction. By addressing racial and socioeconomic achievement gaps, the plan can help bridge the gap between students from different backgrounds and support smaller versus larger districts in implementing effective math curricula. One of the challenges that the plan must address is the changing testing benchmarks, which make it difficult to track changes in math performance over time. The plan's draft is currently under review, and it will face approval by another committee of educators and DPI before it is released.
